Mission and objectives

UNOCHA is part of the United Nations Secretariat responsible for bringing together humanitarian actors to ensure a coherent response to emergencies. OCHA also ensures there is a framework within which each actor can contribute to the overall response efforts. OCHA’s mission is to mobilize and coordinate effective and principled humanitarian action in partner-ship with national and international actors in order to alleviate human suffering in disasters and emergencies; advocate the rights of people in need; promote preparedness and prevention and facilitate sustainable solutions. UNOCHA’s core functions are coordination, information management, policy, advocacy, and humanitarian financing. OCHA has been operational in Ethiopia for several years and its current humanitarian operations are focused on addressing the lifesaving needs of people affected by 3 main crises: the conflict in the North, the drought in the East and South, as well as those displaced by violence in the center and South. UNOCHA operates out of the main office in Addis Ababa and sub offices in several regions in Ethiopia, close to the affected people. This position will be based in the Planning and Coordination Unit to support all parts of the humanitarian programme cycle.

Context

The position is within the Access Unit supporting efforts to secure access to the affected people across the country. The incumbent will be based in Addis Ababa, working mainly in the main office and might be requested sometimes to support field missions.

Task description

Under the direct supervision of Head of the Access Unit, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  •  Contribute to the preparation of written reports, documents and communications, briefings, presentations, correspondence in the Access unit.
  •  Support collection of information, analysis and follow up of humanitarian access incidents reported by aid partners in Ethiopia;
  •  Support timely sharing of information between the main office and field sub offices;
  •  Might be requested to participate in field missions;
  •  Provide analysis of reports, draft summaries and follow up issues with the field offices and support appropriate and timely feedback;
  •  Support organization of the Access Working Group meetings, dissemination of access related information;
  •  Participate in other pertinent working groups, meetings, conferences, consultations with other agencies and partners on humanitarian and emergency relief-related matters;
  •  Perform other duties as required.

This assignment is funded by the Government of the Republic of Ireland and therefore specific criteria apply: – The age criteria is broadened to include candidates who will be between 18 and 29 years of age throughout the assignment. – Only the following are eligible to apply: Irish citizens or a European Economic Area nationals with an unrestricted right to reside in Ireland or have a declaration of refugee status from the Minister for Justice and Law Reform. Selected candidates will be invited for an Assignment Preparation Training (online) in February 2023. The start of the assignment is scheduled for February/March 2023.

0 years of experience in or demonstrated interest in working in difficult environments (humanitarian relief, development).

  •  Prior experience with an NGO is desirable
  •  Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture, (i.e. studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded;

Living conditions and remarks

The position is based in Addis Ababa- the capital city of Ethiopia. The city is generally safe, apart from occasional petty crime. Addis Ababa is a regional hub for many humanitarian, development, and diplomatic agencies. Living conditions are good with basic services easily available (eg schools, restaurants, health, and recreation facilities). Good options for accommodation are available; and taxis are generally safe.
